Staphylococcus aureus cid and lrg expression in a zebrafish model of infection (based at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)).
University of Sheffield
June and July 2016
"A collaboration between the Bayles lab at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the Foster lab at the University of Sheffield was established to investigate the expression of genes involved in Programmed Cell Death (PCD) of Staphylococcus aureus during an infection of live zebrafish. The goal of the collaboration was to see if we could use the tools used at UNMC in the zebrafish infection model to get a better insight into the temporal and stochastic control of PCD gene expression during an infection. During my short time here (two months), I have learned how to use the zebrafish infection model and have used microscopy to visualise the expression of the PCD genes during an infection. This experience has complemented the in vitro research we’ve done at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) as well as provided valuable training to expand my skill set as a scientist.

Although two months is a fairly short amount of time, I have learned a lot and met some great people. I feel like I’ve acquired a better perspective on the scientific community by experiencing research from a different laboratory, and no less in a different country! I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working with future collaborators from the Global Strategic Alliance."
