Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal death for under 5’s. Globally, there is a disparity in PTB rates, with low and middle-income countries shouldering the majority of the global burden. Up to 40% of preterm births are associated with Infection. However, exactly what causes infection to induce preterm birth in some but not others remains unclear. Biography
In 2017 I graduated from Bangor University with a BSc in Biology. During my degree I completed a research project supervised by Dr Olga Golyshina that focussed on archaeal diversity in extremely acidic environments. Following this, I studied Reproductive Developmental Medicine at The University of Sheffield where I completed a research project supervised by Professor Dilly Anumba investigating the prediction of preterm birth titled “metabolite and cytokine expression by cervicovaginal epithelial cells co-cultured with Lactobacillus crispatus and Ureaplasma urealyticum”. I continued my work on preterm birth for my PhD and joined the PRIME global health team run by Professor Anumba. During my time with The Florey Institute, I was the communications officer for 2020 and took part in science outreach including a stall at STEM for girls. |
