Project:   Characterisation of the factors that underpin the success of emergent group A Streptococcus variants using novel human tonsil infection models

Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a gram-positive pathogen associated with a wide array of infections, ranging from scarlet fever to septic shock, providing a cause for significant morbidity and mortality in patients. Human tonsils are known to be the primary site of S. pyogenes infection, however due to lack of appropriate infection models little is currently known about S. pyogenes-tonsil interactions.

This project aims to develop a novel 3D-tissue engineered human model of infection to define the interactions of S. pyogenes with the human tonsil, and subsequently to elucidate its pathogenic processes. Ultimately, the use of a 3D-human model of infection will provide both an invaluable and enhanced understanding in S. pyogenes disease.
