Background
I recently graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in Biochemistry. In the final year of my undergraduate degree, I conducted an extended research project under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Johnson which investigated the role of dynamic granal size in varying light conditions. During my final year, I developed an avid interest in infectious disease and the vast array of treatment techniques which fueled my decision to continue my studies in Sheffield, where I am currently undertaking a master’s degree in Antimicrobial Resistance. In the coming term, I will be conducting a laboratory project with Dr. Dan Humphreys entitled ‘Combatting the mechanisms underlying antimicrobial-resistant typhoid fever with senolytic drugs’. The research aims to investigate the effects of typhoid toxins on host cell senescence and if a number of senolytic drugs could offer a novel route of antibacterial action via inhibition of the senescent phenotype. After this year I plan to enroll on the NHS’s Scientific Training Program where I can use my knowledge of antibiotic resistance and apply it to a clinical setting. |
