Biography: I completed my undergraduate medical training in 2007 and after general medical and surgical rotations in London, moved to Sheffield for higher specialist training in Medical Microbiology. I obtained an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in 2011 and was awarded a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship (2013-2016) under the supervision of Professor Simon Foster and Professor Stephen Renshaw, investigating Staphylococcus aureusvirulence.
After completing my PhD, I was appointed to NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer (2016) in the Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease. I am an Honorary Specialist Training Registrar in Microbiology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Research Interests: My main research interest focuses on understanding the initial stages of Staphylococcus aureus infection and the role of surrounding commensal flora. Models of S. aureus infection require a high inoculum, thought to be due to allowing bacteria to be able to compete in vivo. However, previous work has demonstrated that only a few bacteria, from the inoculum, succeed in passing through an immunological bottleneck and causing infection. Thus, I am interested in understanding the role of the rest of the inoculum. Infection of humans will always occur via a polymicrobial inoculum and improved understanding of these processes will have clinical translation. Teaching Interests: Whilst at Sheffield, I helped deliver the undergraduate (MBChB) Microbiology/Infection curriculum and postgraduate regional infection teaching for Core Medical and Higher Specialist Trainees at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Professional Activities:
to elucidate in vivo mechanisms of S. aureus infection and how this is effected by the surrounding microflora and identify S. aureus components required for growth on human blood and disease Publications: N.B.
