Background
I completed my undergraduate degree in Medical Biochemistry and currently undertaking a Masters course in Antimicrobial Resistance at the University of Sheffield. I will be working with Dr Daniel Humphreys during my research project to identify diagnostic senescence biomarkers to combat antimicrobial resistant typhoid fever. This year I had the chance to represent the Florey Institute at the multidisciplinary National Students' Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance, and the international hackathon, Hacking AMR 2019, in Stockholm. The Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology awarded me the Bailey prize 2019 for my contribution through my roles as academic representative, mentor and international ambassador. As an undergraduate, I undertook a research project in Dr Turner’s lab which involved creating a Streptococcus pyogenes mutant to investigate mechanisms of biofilm formation. I also carried out research in Dr Shaw’s lab to create a Neisseira gonorrhoeae mutant used to study the regulation of the MisRS two-component system. Lastly, I had the opportunity to complete a summer internship at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in 2018 at the Department of Molecular Virology, where I worked with clinical blood samples to investigate a possible variation of human endogenous retrovirus copy numbers in Multiple Sclerosis patients. |
