Background
I completed my BSc degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Sheffield in 2019. During my undergraduate degree, I conducted a literature review on the role of the gut microbiota in human health and disease where I focused primarily on inflammatory bowel disease. My third-year project involved investigating antimicrobial susceptibility in deletion strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. This project sparked my interest in the field of antimicrobial resistance and highlighted the importance of tackling the AMR crisis. My undergraduate degree coincided with a summer placement in a microbiology laboratory at Schϋlke and Mayr. They are a company which aims to prevent infection and contamination in healthcare and industry. This summer placement has inspired me to pursue a career which focusses on making an impact towards a brighter future. I am currently studying a masters in Antimicrobial resistance at the University of Sheffield where I will undertake a research project where I aim to detect Antimicrobial resistance and Type 3 secretion system effector genes of the genus Aeromonas and investigate their functions. |
