Background
As a child, I recall telling my pre-school friends that I was a “scientific investigator” and that my dad was building a laboratory under my bedroom. That sense of curiosity remained with me as I grew older and for my A levels and I chose to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, not really knowing what I wanted to do in the future, but certain of my love for science. I then studied BSc (Hons) Genetics and Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Sheffield and graduated with Employment Experience, as I completed a year in industry at Schülke and Mayr UK Ltd. During my final year as an undergraduate, I undertook a lab project in bacterial genetics with Dr Andrew K Fenton looking at the regulation of penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) and became intrigued by antimicrobial resistance. Through my own research, I became aware of the severity of this global challenge, and my excitement for the ways in which I could contribute to the field grew larger. I am now undertaking the Florey Institute’s specialised MSc course with the goal of studying at PhD level next, as I aspire to have a life-long research career in the field. |
